Mixolydian Mode
Mixolydian is a major scale with its seventh degree flattened. Everything else — including the major third that makes the tonic chord major — is unchanged, so it sounds major while lacking the leading tone that normally pulls a major key home.

What removing the leading tone does
In a major scale the seventh degree sits a semitone below the tonic and leans on it hard. That leaning note is the engine of functional harmony: it is what makes the fifth-degree chord want to resolve, and it is why a major key feels like it has a destination.
Flatten it and the semitone becomes a whole tone. The pull vanishes, and with it the sense that the music is heading anywhere in particular. What remains is a major-sounding scale that can circle indefinitely without ever needing to arrive — which is exactly why so much groove-based and riff-based music lives here rather than in the ordinary major scale.
It is the dominant seventh chord's own scale
Stack thirds on the first degree of Mixolydian and you get root, major third, perfect fifth, minor seventh — a dominant seventh chord. That is not a coincidence: Mixolydian is the fifth mode of the major scale, and the fifth degree of a major key is where the dominant seventh chord lives.
This makes the mode immediately practical rather than theoretical. Any time a dominant seventh chord is sitting still — a long vamp, a blues, a static groove — Mixolydian is the scale whose notes are already inside it, with no altered tension to justify. The chord and the scale are the same material presented vertically and horizontally.
The flat-VII chord
Two things are diagnostic here, and they are the same fact seen twice. The chord on the fifth degree has turned minor, which is the missing leading tone made visible in the harmony. And a major chord appears a whole tone BELOW the tonic — the flattened seventh — which an ordinary major key does not contain at all.
Alternating the tonic with that ♭VII is the most common gesture the mode has, and it is instantly familiar from folk and riff-driven rock writing. It works because neither chord wants the other: with no leading tone anywhere, the pair can rotate indefinitely without either one being the answer to the question.
Practising the one changed note
Because only the seventh degree moves, the useful exercise is to play a major scale and stop on the seventh, then play it again and flatten that note, over a held tonic chord. Alternating the two versions of the seventh against a drone teaches your ear the difference far faster than running either scale in isolation.
On a guitar there is a further shortcut worth knowing: the flattened seventh is the note a whole tone below the octave, which on most positional shapes means moving one finger back a fret from the leading tone. In traditional bagpipe music the scale appears for a physical reason rather than a stylistic one — the instrument's fixed chanter simply does not produce a leading tone — which is a useful reminder that modes often exist because of what an instrument can do, not because someone chose them.

- How do I find a Mixolydian scale quickly?
- Play the major scale a perfect fifth below your tonic, starting from your tonic. G Mixolydian is the notes of C major started on G; D Mixolydian is the notes of G major started on D.
- Is Mixolydian the same as the blues scale?
- No. They overlap on the flattened seventh and the perfect fifth, but Mixolydian has a major third and a full seven notes, while the blues scale has a flattened third, a flattened fifth and six notes. Blues playing often moves between the two, which is where the confusion comes from.
- Why does a dominant seventh chord not sound unstable in Mixolydian?
- Because nothing is asking it to resolve. A dominant seventh feels unstable when it is functioning as the fifth chord of a key with a tonic waiting for it. When the same chord is the tonic, there is no destination for it to move to, and the ear settles on it.
